George Tiller, RIP

For those of us who believe in the sanctity of human life, there can be but only one view on the killing of my neighbor George Tiller: utter condemnation. Ethically and politically, this murder places the pro life movement in a very bad place and tarnishes its image even if the murderer(s) turns out to be entirely unconnected with the actual movement.

Playing host to George Tiller's business was one of the dubious honors of Wichita, Kansas. He represented the very extreme of the abortion industry and its intricate web of political and financial power. From church pastors to legislators to prosecutors, his millions bought favors and flattery across the board, and gave him influence from Wichita to Washington DC. For thirty five years, thus, in the heart of pro life America, he was able to carry out his grisly craft with impunity and above the law. A one time physician, Tiller had long abandoned the Hippocratic Oath of 'doing no harm', and specialized in killing innocent little children.

Yet, George Tiller's life was sacred too, he was a father, a husband, a grandfather, and a friend. Nobody but a properly constituted court of law and jury of his peers had the right to pass judgment on him. Those responsible for his murder ought to be brought to book with maximum speed and punished under the full weight of the laws of the land.

At the same time, we must be vigilant that this heinous act does not provide fodder for those radical extremists in the halls of power who would like nothing more than to chip away at the fundamental rights of speech, assembly, and due process of people of faith.

George Tiller, fellow Kansan, was everything I found disgusting in a man who claimed to be a physician. But his life was sacred too. May he rest in peace and his family be comforted.
