With little credible hope of victory, the warrior still fights on till the last breath is drawn and the final ceasefire imposed. For that is the credo of the warrior class: some lost causes are so dear, so close to the heart, so entwined in the very fibers of existence that the thought of giving up is simply anathema. Call it hopeless romance or call it a lost cause….but true warriors do fight on till every ounce of their being is given to the call of love and duty.
I have seen it before. It was another war hero twelve years ago to the date who criss- crossed the country for 96 straight hours in a bus knowing well that the war was lost but convinced that the woman he loved above all else wanted him to make the fight till the very end. Handicapped from a World War II injury, mocked by a generation too effeminate to understand, let alone respect, heroism, and ridiculed by an elitist media, Bob Dole carried on till the wee hours of that Election Tuesday in 1996. He did it because that Frenchwoman who stands guard at New York’s harbor was the love of his life.
Another hero stands today where my fellow Kansan Bob Dole stood twelve years ago. An ugly combination of special interest money, vote fraud, engineered financial crisis, and frothing media moguls want John McCain finished and with him the last symbol of a time when American youth endeavored to emulate George Pattons more than Paris Hiltons. But it has to be done, the fight has to be fought till there is no more fighting, nothing more to give to a cause greater than self. The Scriptures guarantee us not victory every time but do ask that we conduct ourselves so that each can say ‘I kept the faith, I stayed the course, I finished the race’.
We will need that reassurance. In January we will be faced, for the first time since 1993, a liberal Democrat majority controlling every political branch of government and thus unchecked in its agenda of remaking America in the image of Western Europe and Canada. A takeover of the health care system, federally mandated tax payer funded abortions on demand on children till the day of delivery and afterwards, prosecution of pastors who speak out against sin, grabbing of guns from private homes, closure of Catholic adoption services, firing of doctors, nurses, and pharmacists who are practicing Christians…………..and this will be only in the first few weeks of the liberal ascendancy to one party rule next year.
And that is precisely why John McCain’s almost hopeless and grim battle must go on till the very end. For only then, looking back at the twilight of the America we knew as the shining city on the hill, we will be able to tell those who come after us that “Yes, we did all that could be done.”
