As I watch the supposedly non-partisan Presidential Forum at Columbia University in NYC (yeah..a school where Iran's bigot president is welcomed and America's military recruiters are barred), it occurs to me that the moderators and Barack Obama-and to some extent John McCain-are not exactly handy with the dictionary. Volunteerism is..well..voluntary! But you hear these folks you'd think they have never seen the word in a thesarus. A government department for volunteer service on top of the six or seven existing government agencies that 'run' federal volunteer service! The Obamamaniacs even want to federalize the volunteer fire departments.
I will tell you whati think this is about.
It is about providing taxpayer funded housing, insurance, and tuition to upper middle class brats who don't want to work yet or want to feel the thrill of being 'in public service' without actually doing the hard work and sacrifice that comes with true volunteerism. We do it for the Peace Corps and we do it for AmeriCorps..and now Obama wants to expand this whole silliness across the board.
There are millions of Americans who silently give their time, effort, money, energy to their neighbors and communities through truly voluntary groups without being 'encouraged' by the Washington bureaucracy. That is where the spirit of service truly lives. What Judy Woodruff and Barack Obama want is simply an expansion of the federal bureaucracy to serve a bunch of spoiled brats at the expense of the taxpayer.
That is not volunteerism...that is subsidization.
